Instilling Independence at Camp Horizon

EricjaegarThis week, we celebrate the 4th of July by observing our country’s independence and freedom which we have historically fought so hard to earn and maintain. We are reminded to reflect on our ability to speak, live, work, and enjoy life freely and independently. With these freedoms comes the idea that we are “all created equally.” This serves as the backbone of the ideals at Camp Horizon, The Up Center’s summer camp for children and young adults with disabilities, where limitations do not stand in the way of progress.

While many will enjoy time away this month to rejuvenate, friends of ours like Eric (pictured here with Jaeger, The Up Center’s therapy dog) will be enjoying his vacation at the beautiful Camp Horizon in Norfolk.

For years, Camp Horizon has helped people with disabilities connect with others and build a community. With a low camper-to-staff ratio, campers like Eric are sure to have activities that are adapted to their individual ability level.

There is no shortage of laughter, smiles, friendships, and memories in the making at Camp Horizon and Eric is no exception. A social butterfly, Eric is the type of person you look forward to meeting. He makes a point to get to know you and your name, making everyone around him feel special.

Building friendships with the staff and fellow campers has kept Eric coming back to Camp Horizon for eight years. In fact, he will tell you that one of his best friends is Jaeger, The Up Center’s therapy dog. The Camp Horizon staff works hard to ensure that campers experience the best summer possible. Often, that means that new camp friends become like family.

Between the time spent making new friends and reconnecting with old ones, Camp Horizon delivers a curriculum of behavioral activities, therapeutic recreation, and education. Campers enjoy fun activities like artwork, swimming, and even fashion shows. These help children and young adults build confidence, expand independence, and reach their full potential as individuals and team players.
