Parenting Education & Support

In addition to family and child counseling services, The Up Center offers a range of parent education and support services.

EARLY CHILDHOOD HOME VISITING PROGRAMS

Parents as Teachers (PAT) is a model program that helps parents during the critical early years of their children’s lives, from conception to kindergarten. Through home visits and group meetings, we support parents in promoting school readiness and healthy development of their children.

FOR CHILDREN’S SAKE

For Children’s Sake is a co-parenting seminar that provides parents with skills to shield their children from the conflict of separation or divorce. It is recommended that each parent attend separate sessions. For Children’s Sake is approved for court mandated participants and all other parents undergoing separation or divorce procedures.

Course cost is $50/participant and pre-registration is required. Three locations are available:

SCHOOL-BASED FAMILY STRENGTHENING

Strengthening Families gives children and adolescents the tools they need to avoid drugs, tobacco and alcohol through improved resistance skills, family communication, and parental involvement. This program is offered to children and their parents at selected Portsmouth public schools.

Sessions are free and registration is required. The 14-week sessions run:

Tuesday, October 11, 2016- February 2, 2017 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at John Tyler Elementary School

Wednesday, October 12, 2016 – February 2, 2017 from 5:30-7:30pm at Woodrow Wilson High School

Thursday, October 13, 2016- February 2, 2017 from 5:30-7:30pm at Cradock Middle School

Strengthening Families is funded through a partnership with the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth

SYSTEMATIC TRAINING FOR EFFECTIVE PARENTING

Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) is a nationally-recognized seven-week program for parents of children ages one to six. Through this program, parents learn how to increase their child’s self-esteem, improve parent-child communication, and apply effective discipline techniques. STEP is approved for court mandated participants and for all other parents interested in learning about childhood development and behavior.

Course cost is $50/participant and pre-registration is required. Two locations are available:

Jan. 11 – Feb. 22; Mar. 15 – Apr. 26; May 17 – Jun. 28; Aug. 9 – Sept. 20; Oct. 11 – Nov. 22
