Mental Health Counseling

The Up Center’s caring counseling professionals can help people of all ages dealing with life’s challenges. Many services are free or offered on a sliding fee scale*. We also accept many insurances. All clients seeking counseling services are will be served regardless of ability to pay. No one is refused service because of lack of financial means to pay.

SUPPORT FOR RECENT VETERANS

The Up Center offers free counseling to recent veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, helping them to cope with the emotional challenges of post-war experience. We provide veterans with the skills necessary to adjust to civilian life.

SUPPORT FOR MILITARY FAMILIES

Our outpatient counseling services can help military families deal with issues such as deployment, financial distress, and depression. Counseling fees are based on income and family size. We accept select insurance plans, including Champus and Tricare.

TRAUMA INFORMED CARE

The Up Center’s Seeking Safety Groups provide research-based support for men and women who have experienced trauma, including those who have been abused, victimized by crime, or distressed by war or natural disasters. Participants will work to learn positive coping skills.

ANGER MANAGEMENT & DOMESTIC VIOLENCE GROUPS

The Up Center’s Anger Management and Domestic Violence groups help inhibit violent behavior by improving social skills and impulse control while teaching empathy and compassion for others.

WOMEN’S ASSERTIVENESS GROUP

This 8-week class is free and open to any woman 21+ who wants to learn to be more assertive in her relationships. Sessions take place in Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Suffolk. To join, contact Jessica Oulahan by email or at 757-965-8652. Space is limited; register early.

TELEMENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING

Telemental Health is secure, online counseling for those living in rural Western Tidewater. These services allow individuals and families access to an Up Center counselor through computer and Internet connection.

EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (EAP)

The Up Center provides EAP services to employees of some local corporations on a contract basis.
