Mentor a Child

Team Up Mentoring

Team Up is an award-winning mentoring program that has matched hundreds of youth with volunteers from the South Hampton Roads community. But there’s more work to do. Team Up has over 300 mentees that are on its waiting list for a caring role model. Won’t you join us? Please consider participating in one of our programs below:

Community Based Program

This one-on-one mentoring program requires a commitment of a few hours a week for one year. We match adults, ages 20 and older, with kids ages 6-17. Mentors form a trusting friendship and serve as role models to youth, many of whom come from single parent homes or from foster homes. Most simply desire more time with a supportive, caring adult. Since the program’s inception, we have made over 300 matches.

Mentor Orientation is the first step in the process to become a mentor! Sessions takes place the third Wednesday of each month at The Up Center Portsmouth Office, at 1805 Airline Blvd., Portsmouth, VA 23707. RSVP to Letitia Carrington or call 757-397-2121 ext. 337.

Face Forward Group and One-On-One Mentoring

This federally funded program matches volunteer mentors, ages 24 and older, with first time juvenile offenders aged 16-24. The commitment is for one year. Groups will meet weekly for 14 weeks, followed by one-on-one mentoring for the rest of the year. Mentors will help their mentees by sharing their own life experiences and success stories.

Mentee Shakera and Mentor Helena – matched since April 2009.

The benefits of mentoring are tremendous:

  • 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
  • Almost a third less likely to hit someone
  • Better in their academic behavior, attitudes and performance
  • More likely to have a higher quality relationship with their guardians and peers

97% of children participating in Team Up show improvement in at least one of the three areas of Behavior, Academic Performance, and Psychological & Social Functioning after being matched for a year.

I joined Team Up because I’m confident that all children will succeed if you believe in them and give them the courage to succeed.”
