Foster Children Find a Forever Home

Dewey and Ellen Corbin watch with a smile, as their four adoptive children–Augumn (10), Shay (9), Paige (7) and Devin (6)–play in the front yard. “There once was a time when things weren’t so carefree,” says Ellen. The children’s biological parents were drowning in substance abuse issues. “Many nights, the children weren’t sure if food was going to be at the table,” says Ellen.

That’s when the Corbins decided to become foster parents for the children. In October, the couple took a step further by giving the siblings a permanent home. Ellen speaks from experience, having been raised by adoptive parents when she was three. “I have two siblings that I have never gotten to know,” Ellen explains. And I didn’t want this to happen to my adoptive children.”

In celebration of National Foster Care month, we thank the heroes, like the Corbins, that have created a safe haven for children who need loving homes. If you’re interested in learning more about foster care, contact Farra Hackworth at (757) 965-8670 or email farra.hackworth@theupcenter.org.
