April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

Each year, more than three million children are the victims of child abuse. Last year in Hampton Roads alone, over 14,000 calls were made to report child abuse or neglect. As part of Child Abuse Prevention Month this April, The Up Center, Hampton Roads’ oldest and largest non-profit family services agency, is taking part in Prevent Child Abuse Virginia’s Pinwheels for Prevention campaign by planting pinwheel gardens at their Norfolk (222 W. 19 St.) and Portsmouth (1805 Airline Blvd.) offices. Participants from The Up Center’s Parents as Teachers program along with The Up Center’s President & CEO, Tina Gill, planted pinwheels at their 19th Street location Thursday. IMG_7519

The pinwheel – an uplifting symbol of childhood – represents our efforts to ensure the healthy development of children, while recognizing that child development is a building block for community and economic development. When children don’t have equal opportunities for growth and development, we put the future of our society at risk.

Throughout the month of April, The Up Center has a variety of events going on to spread awareness about Child Abuse. Up Center staff will be at the Celebrating Children event at Mt. Trashmore on April 30. There you can find out more about the parenting education and support services The Up Center provides as well as sign The Up Center’s Parenting Pledge.
