Our Impact

For more than a century, we have touched tens of thousands of lives thanks to countless volunteers and donors, our foster families and mentors, and The Up Center’s dedicated staff.

Our mission… and some of the ways we accomplish it:

We Protect Our Children…

  • We’ve placed 120 children in loving foster or adoptive homes, a 24% increase over last year’s placements.
  • We’ve paired nearly 200 at-risk youth with caring mentors since beginning our Team Up program in 2008. In 2011, Team Up was honored as Virginia’s Outstanding Mentoring Program by the Virginia Mentoring Partnership.

We Empower People in Crisis…

  • We’ve helped 400 families facing foreclosure keep their homes and assisted another 1,400 households with financial and housing counseling.
  • Our Food Pantry served an increasing number of people in need, distributing over 18 tons of food to over 2,000 people.

“The Up Center helped us get our lives back on track. We are forever grateful.”

We Maximize Independence for Those with Disabilities…

  • Last year alone, we helped over 1,200 people with disabilities, including disabled veterans, to avoid institutionalization and integrate into the community by offering them bill paying services, day support, and supported placement in family homes.
  • Our Camp Horizon served 133 children and adults with intellectual disabilities in the summer of 2013, and offered the region’s only sleepover camp for people with profound physical limitations.

“I believe that people with special needs also have special talents.  Brian is removing fear of autism from others. After they meet Brian with his sparkling eyes, big smile and gentle manner, everyone falls in love with him. And that’s a start for the rest of us.”

We Strengthen Families…

  • Our counselors provided over 23,000 hours of service last year, assisting thousands of people in overcoming grief, trauma and other stresses of life–including military families dealing with the stresses of deployment.
  • Our Early Childhood programs provided intensive parent education and support in the homes of 269 families, helping to ensure healthy children and future school readiness.

“I was homeless and a single mom. With the help of The Up Center, I learned to overcome these obstacles. I’m in college now, work part time and have goals.”
