Abilities Are Uncovered at Camp Horizon

TyqwuanFor years, hundreds of participants have flocked to Camp Horizon where children and young adults with disabilities can enjoy the good times that summer camp brings: non-stop fun, ample sunshine, and countless friends. The caring and supportive staff focuses on a curriculum tailored to meet the individual needs and abilities of the campers. This provides personal, one-on-one attention for the campers while building their confidence.

Another reason for Camp Horizon’s success is its ability to cultivate a team atmosphere. From basketball to line dancing, each person is essential in making the activity fun and exciting.

Tyqwuan is one camper that appreciates this team culture. When he began at Camp Horizon five years ago, he was shy and rarely spoke. “Today, you can find him enjoying a cool dip in the pool with his friends and smiling to people who walk by,” says Jane Trahan, his camp counselor. He has even grown an attachment to The Up Center’s therapy dog, Jaegar, and often calls him by name.

Thanks to the social component that Camp Horizon brings, many campers, like Tyquawn, experience new friendships that help uncover the true abilities that they’ve always had.
