Team Up
The Team Up mentoring program was formed to fill the gap created when Big Brothers/ Big Sisters of South Hampton Roads closed. The program matches adults age 20 and older with kids ages six to 17. The mentors serve as role models to youths, who often come from single parent homes or who desire more time with a responsible, caring adult. There are two programs available:
Community Program -- This program requires a commitment of a few hours a week for one year. The mentor and child meet weekly to participate in everyday activities, such as playing basketball or going to the beach.
School Mentoring – This is a school-based program. Mentors meet with a child for one hour a week for the duration of the school year. The mentor plays games or helps with homework during school hours.
For more information about volunteering as a mentor or enrolling your child as a participant, please view our brochure or contact Lindsay Jackson at 757-397-2121 ext. 302.

“It was great teaching the two boys I’ve mentored how to swim. They were scared at first. We took it day by day. First walking in the shallow end - or trying to get them to grab rings off the bottom. Then I took each of them to a pool with a slide. That got them really excited about learning how to swim.”
-Lt Sean Murray, Team Up Mentor
“The Team Up staff did a fantastic job matching me with a child. They were really concerned about what I wanted and about what Chad’s mother wanted.”
-Attorney Tim Anderson, talking about his match with 12-year old Chad
