Camp Horizon
Each summer, both children, ages five and older, and adults with disabilities take a fun-filled break at Camp Horizon. Our dedicated counselors work individually with campers using a curriculum focused on therapeutic recreation and education. Camp Horizon is held from mid-June through mid-August. Participants may attend day or overnight camp for a week or more. To enroll, please contact us or complete our registration forms.

Representative Payee Program
Our Representative Payee Program provides financial management to people with disabilities, including adults with mental illness or an intellectual disability. By paying bills and ensuring sufficient money to last throughout the month, we protect vulnerable individuals from being financially exploited and from becoming homeless.

Legal Custodians
The Legal Custodians program provides financial management to veterans with disabilities. The program allows The Up Center to become a veteran’s custodian, allowing the agency to manage benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs if certain conditions are met.

Sponsored Placement for People with Special Needs
Through our Family Life program, individuals with intellectual disabilities live in homes with families rather than in a group home or an institution, maximizing their potential for independent living, learning and socialization. Family Life providers receive customized training, work as a team with Case Managers and Family Life Clinicians to provide assistance and training for the client, and receive monthly reimbursement for providing this valuable, caring service. If you are interested in opening up your home to a person with disabilities, please contact David Ballard at 757.965.8631.

(Please note that placement of someone with Intellectual Disabilities in the Family Life Program requires that the individual be the recipient of a Medicaid MR Waiver and that a a referral is made by their Case Manager from the Community Services Board.  If someone you know is Intellectually Disabled, and you have questions about the Medicaid MR Waiver or the referral process, please contact the CSB from which they receive services.)

Canine Assistance
The Students’ Best Friend program takes place in a special education classroom at Booker T Washington High School. The program uses a trained Facility Dog from Canine Companions for Independence to help develop student skills ranging from social, speech and motor skills to the acquisition of science and other academic knowledge.

Therapeutic Recreation Consultation
This service is available to individuals who have a Medicaid Mental Retardation waiver or a Medicaid Developmental Disability waiver. The consultation helps clients learn how to discover and engage in meaningful leisure activities to increase independence and enhance quality of life. A recreational therapist assesses the individual's skills and interests, develops a support plan, and works with individuals and caregivers to make community connections and implement the plan.
