Pregnant Teens
A teenage pregnancy can increase the likelihood of school dropout and poverty, while also placing newborn children at a higher risk of having health problems. Our Resource Mothers program aims to prevent such troubles and get lives back on track. The program helps provide prenatal healthcare, childbirth preparation, and parental training to teenage mothers and fathers in Virginia Beach and Portsmouth. Contact us or visit www.vahealth.org/resourcemothers for more information about this free, model program.
First-Time Parents
Through our Healthy Families program, Family Support Workers visit the homes of first-time parents to:
- Demonstrate proper child care
- Explain a child’s developmental stages
- Connect parents with immunization clinics, pediatricians and health insurance
- Help parents locate community resources, such as educational and job training opportunities.
Healthy Families is free and is offered to families in Portsmouth and Norfolk. Parents can enroll in the program from the prenatal stages up until the baby is three months old. Contact us or visit www.healthyfamiliesamerica.org for more information about this model program.
Parenting Help -- Parents as Teachers
Children experience rapid brain growth and development in the early years, giving parents a crucial task of molding that early growth. Our free Parents as Teachers program helps parents with this role. The program is designed for parents with children three years of age and younger, including newborns. It uses home visits and group meetings to help parents ensure their children reach their full potential. This program is offered in Portsmouth, Norfolk, Chesapeake and Virginia Beach. Contact us or visit www.patnc.org to learn more about this model national program.
Effective Parenting
Systematic Training For Effective Parenting (STEP) is a seven-week program for parents of children ages one to six that teaches parents how to boost their child’s self-esteem, open the lines of communication and implement effective discipline techniques.

"The Healthy Families Program really helped me in dealing with the different stages of development with my babies. It helped me know what tests needed to be taken, what problems to look for, and how just to have patience. Plus, really just to have someone to talk to was a major thing.”
-Atrisha Corbett, mother of twins in the Healthy Families program
Every year, The Up Center visits over 300 parents at home to prevent child maltreatment, promote self-sufficiency, and ensure school readiness.
