Meet Dora:

Local high-school student overcomes challenges of blindness through Up Center Books' job readiness program

Dora lost her sight at the age of three, but that hasn't stopped her from carrying on with her daily life.  In fact, this local high school student has placed herself ahead of the curve through a work experience program with Booker T. Washington High School and Up Center Books.  Here, she gained marketable skills in preparation for her first job.

From February to June 2011, Dora spent her time at Up Center Books separating hard and soft bound books, counting books and placing shipping labels on envelopes. She utilized her heightened sense of touch and tools like the L-guide (pictured) to complete the assigned tasks.

Rosann Fox of the Norfolk Public School system says, “As students, like Dora prepare to graduate from high school, they can feel confident that they have the tools for a bright future.” Rosann has worked collaboratively with Up Center books to implement the program since 2009. “The program has been working because it’s a place to learn, grow, even overcome in a real world setting,” Rosann added.

Dora explains, “I am able to overcome my blindness because I was given opportunities like this. I had people believing in me, and I’m thankful.”

The work experience program matches groups of four to five high school students throughout the school year with businesses like Up Center Books. Positions focus on the student’s individual talents and abilities and allows for continued growth. After completing the program, students emerge with new skill sets and increased self-esteem.
