Why We Do What We Do

Workers learn valuable job skills Our program provides a pathway out of poverty for homeless and very low income adults, who often face great barriers to employment. Our ongoing, long-term approach involves training clients to become valuable employees with marketable job skills. We not only help them take responsibility, starting with realistic small steps, but we also teach them concrete job skills, such as data entry, warehousing and shipping.

All Spotlight Books trainees also work with a case manager to address issues that may affect their ability to succeed in training and employment. These issues often include:

  • money management
  • housing stability
  • long-term educational goals
  • addiction recovery maintenance
  • ongoing mental health stabilization
  • family violence prevention and treatment
  • and children's needs

WHAT IS SOCIAL ENTREPREUNERSHIP?
Social purpose enterprises offer successful, long-term employment for individuals with significant employment barriers. It strikes a balance between sending people into private industry jobs with little or no support, and social service agencies that hire their own former clients.

Workers sort and orgnaize incoming booksSocial purpose enterprises are real businesses, dealing in neutral products far divorced from the world of family trauma and dysfunction. They provide real world on-the-job training, with plentiful coaching and supportive services to help trainees learn marketable job skills and unlearn self-destructive work habits. Social purpose enterprises also often continue to work with trainees after they graduate to jobs in the world of regular employment. Spotlight Books, for example, provides job retention counseling for trainees until they have successfully maintained outside employment for at least one year.
